Under the regulation of General Insurance Business, the FSA can stop companies who continue to sell insurance illegally from trading, and only FSA-accredited companies are allowed to sell or advise on insurance. Mobile dealers and operators can provide information only to customers but are not allowed to either sell to, or advise customers on policies. Another option is for dealers to sign onto distributors insurance schemes, which are modified to be exempt from regulations but provide less in-depth cover.

If you decide to keep your phone insurance separate from your household policy, some direct insurers can provide cheaper cover for your mobile than the retailers on the high street.
